Love wedding lighting, but not sure where to start? The good news is that do-it-yourself wedding lighting is actually very easy for anyone to set up. No experience required! Here is an overview of four popular DIY wedding lighting techniques that you can use to create a beautiful wedding reception without breaking the bank.
#1: DO-IT-YOURSELF UPLIGHTING
Also Known As: Uplights, Up-lighting, LED Uplighting
Uplighting adds splashes of colorful light to the walls of your venue. This is a great way to set the mood or transform a room. “Uplights” are small lights that are placed on the floor to shine up the walls. Setup is easy: 1) Plug them in; 2) Pick a color; 3) Set on floor near wall. You’re done!
Each uplight covers the wall with color from floor to ceiling. Set the uplights to just about any shade of any color using a button on the light. Uplights can be linked together with power cords using a single outlet. Or, use wireless uplights, which are powered by batteries instead of power cords.
Cost: The typical rental cost for uplighting a 100-guest ballroom is $100 – $200. The cost depends on the look you would like to achieve. For subtle accent lighting, I recommend using 6 uplights. This includes one uplight behind the cake table, three uplights behind the head table, and two uplights near the dance floor. Otherwise, for a more dramatic look, place uplights around the entire venue, spacing them 5 – 10 feet apart. You can rent uplights for $19/each + free shipping nationwide.
#2: DO-IT-YOURSELF MONOGRAM LIGHTING
Also Known As: Gobo projector
A gobo projector (pronounced “go-bow”) puts your names or monogram in lights. This is a great way to add a unique and personal touch to your wedding. For easy setup, look for all-inclusive gobo packages that include a custom design, gobo disc, and projector. When the gobo arrives, it is pre-loaded with your custom design. All you need to do is plug it in, set it on a table, and point it at a wall.Cost: $99 to rent a complete custom gobo package.
#3: DO-IT-YOURSELF STARRY NIGHT LIGHTING
Also Known As: Blisslight
A blisslight creates a realistic looking night sky effect above the dance floor. Thousands of slowly moving, twinkling stars will appear on the ceiling, along with an optional blue cloudfield. For setup, just plug in the blisslight, set it on a cocktail table, and point it up at the ceiling. This is truly an amazing lighting effect!Cost: $149 to create a starry night sky.
#4: DO-IT-YOURSELF CAKE SPOTLIGHT
Also Known As: Cake Spot, Pin Spot, Pin Spotting
Show off your wedding cake using cake spotlights! These are small, battery-operated white lights that highlight your wedding cake. This is a great way to make your cake stand out, and it also enhances wedding photos. To set up cake spotlights, attach them to the ceiling, curtain rods, or overhead light fixtures, and point them down at the cake.Cost: $20 – $30 to highlight your wedding cake.
